West Burgundy - Autun
and Saulieu
|
 |
|
The Cathedral of Saint
Lazarus in Autun is reached through a beautiful road west from
Beaune - firstly through "Premier Cru" country then rolling
farmland.
The present Cathedral, which was
once the "chapel" for the nearby palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, dates back to the 1100s, and
includes this magnificent tympanum which is probably the best
preserved example of the genre in existence - in part because
it was invisible under a layer of plaster in the critical
destructive years between 1786 and
1834.
And there is much more, including narrative
capitals.

The
road north from Autun to Avallon takes one through the
hills, woods and pastures of the Morvan area and National Park. This is Charolais
country, and for meaties the town of Saulieu in the middle has a
Charolais Festival on the third weekend in August each year.
Dom
P was for once not here for the meat, but for the old Abbey Church,
now Basilica of Saint Andoche, which has been beautifully restored
over the past six years and has more West Burgundian narrative
capitals ... this time with modern lighting available. Again,
much more to come!!
